Zork1 for commodore64

<Zork1> is a classic masterpiece game of interactive fiction or text adventure genre developed by Infocom and released in December 1980. Zork1 is the first game created by Infocomm, a company founded in 1979 by Tim Anderson, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels, and Dave Lebling, who were members of the Dynamic Modeling Group of the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. Since its release in 1980, it has been loved for as long as it has been released on various platforms including Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, IBM PC, Apple II, MSX, PlayStation and Sega Saturn. After Zork1, not only Zork2 and Zork3, but also the Enchanter series, the Zork Quest series, and several games set in the Zork universe have been released and <Zork> is listed in <Game Canon>, which is a list of the 10 most important games in history to be kept in the Library of Congress.

Zork1's first screen

When you run Zork1, simple game information is displayed as shown in the screen above, and the game starts immediately.

"You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here."

Given the circumstances, the player must now decide what action to take and enter the appropriate command on the blinking cursor. There's a Mailbox, so Let's open it. Enter "open mailbox" and the game will take the player to a full-fledged adventure. To Zork, The Great Underground Empire.

Zork1 for Apple2

Like the intro, the game proceeds with the situation and the player's actions accordingly. Decide where to head among all the fork in the road, solve puzzles, fight enemies and find treasures. Draw a map in your mind and collect all the treasures. That's the goal of the Zork1 and the story continues with Zork2.

It runs on the world's most powerful graphics chip, imagination

I didn't know about the Zork, but it was mentioned several times in CBS's sitcom <Bigbang Theory>, so I immediately searched it. In particular, the Big Bang Theory season 4 episode 6, there is no mention of Zork but says Sheldon plays a classic 1980s text-based game, powered by the most powerful graphics chipset of his imagination. And he type "hit troll with axe" repeatedly. If you play Zork1, you can really face the same scene like it.(Of course, it could be just another game, since trolls aren't unique to Zork.)

Zork Anthology

Anyway, I recommend it if you want to try to play a game with only text running on DOS. Steam doesn't sell Zork1 separately, but sells Anthology for 6,750 won. If you purchase Zork Anthology, you can play Zork I, Zork II, Zork III, Beyond Zork, Zork Zero, and Planetfall guns.
